The project involves a self-sufficient residential building for twelve people with a hemp plantation. The building is located in Altenmark near Fürstenfeld, in southeast Styria, an area with thermal springs.
The wood from the region is used in every form for the construction. The load-bearing parts are made of spruce, the insulation is wood fiber and the battens for the envelope are treated using the Shou SugiBan process. Heating is also done with wood in the central fireplace. The thermal spring also plays an important role in the hot water supply. The wastewater is treated with an artificial wetland.
The path from the main entrance leads directly to the common room. The fireplace is the focal point of this space. It supplies the building with heat and is also intended to form the social center. The question of how to create an undefined border between two spaces is answered with niches and courtyards.
